Another 6G3 question...

Post by dehughes »

The schematic:

I'm intending to just use the "Normal" channel in my next build, so as such, I don't need the have the 220k mixer resistors in between the two 12AX7 stages. However, in order to maintain the "correct" vibe of a Brown Deluxe preamp, should I leave them in anyway? That is, would eliminating the resistors change the gain/feel/tone significantly? Should I put something in between the stages anyway for stability's sake?

Thanks so much!

Just retain the one 220k that belongs to the Normal channel, and it should work just like the original.

Sweet! Many thanks. So I don't have to provide a 220k to ground, then? I've heard that it provides "a ground reference" for that stage and keeps things in line...but then I don't know enough to confirm or refute that logic.

no---the ground reference will come from have a pot (the vol control) behind the stage connected to ground. rh

Mark, rhinson, thank you both very much. I'm indebted to the people who contribute to this board by offering their knowledge to those like myself who are in great need of guidance. You guys rock!

For what it is worth, here is a schematic of an amp I'm working on. It started life as a Z-28 clone but now it is starting to morph into a brown deluxe of sorts.

Funnily enough (apart from the fixed bias) this is almost exactly what I had originally in my 5E3 chassis. Hope you find a non-micro EF86 - I gave up in the end  :? Besides the microphonics it sounded really nice.

Very interesting...my amp is more of a Brown Deluxe 12AX7 normal channel and PI circuit, but with a 6SN7 channel as well as a 5E3 power section.

I'm curious to hear how yours turns out, jaydawg...
