6CW5/EL86 output transformer

Post by 13GB5 »

Acquired a bunch of 6CW5/EL86 tubes in a box of TV stuff. Televisions used them as single ended with a 6K impedance primary.

Figured to use them in push pull. So I am looking for an output transformer with maybe 3K ohm primary and 8 ohm secondary at around 15 watts. I tried using a 12 volt toroid transformer, 12v winding for output and the two 120v windings as the primary. It worked but the quality was not so hot. Edcor has the XPP15-16-8K which looks interesting at $20.

Can anyone suggest a transformer that is not too expensive? Thanks.

The GE data sheet confirms the 3K primary. Of course that is not a fixed number as it will vary with plate voltage, etc. http://tubedata.itchurch.org/sheets/093/6/6CW5.pdf

It also says this is a 25W (max) tube and it pulls lots of current (95-203mA for a pair in AB1.)

If you think you can get by with a 40W OT, look at the OT40PP here, just under $50: http://www.musicalpowersupplies.com/products/

The 50W Edcor is going to run about $65.

Here's a Magnetic Components Classic Tone for a Marshall that will set you back a little over $70 http://www.classictone.net/40-18074.html

Unless I read the data sheet wrong, you aren't going to get by with that $20 OT.

I'm thinking a Deluxe Reverb OT with 6k6 primary and 4-8-16 secondaries. Use the 16 ohm tap with an 8 ohm speaker to get 3k3. Under $50 from Magnetic Components.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried them with an old Sun/Dynaco clone (30w?). I was surprised it worked as well as it did. But suggest that no one throw away their EL34's. In comparison it was definitely under-powered.

Also tried a 6BQ5 20w pp transformer with the 8 ohm speaker on the 16 ohm tap. Very clean, sounds similar to the Sun at half the Sun's size.

I'm into this so far at $0.00. So I'll keep on the lookout for interesting (cheap) combinations.
