Carbon comp resistors=noise. Changes in tone after replacing them = cold solder joints, dirty 50 yr old component leads, your AC kicked on and dropped your house AC by 5 volts. If you haven't tested it, 5 volts difference in ac supply change makes a noticeable difference in tone.

I defy anyone to be able to hear the difference in "tone" from a CC, MF, CF resistor in a plate load position in a double blind test. Hint, The only way you can is by listening to the shot noise when the amp is cranked with no input. CC's have more noise. My unsolicited recommendation, quit being stupid putting 50 yr old shelf-worn hygroscopic parts of inferior construction into new amps. Or old ones. I do carefully when restoring valuable old amps simply for aesthetics. If someone is going out to make his or her living with the amp, no way.

This voltage vs resistance thing is a red herring, its a very minor difference that has no audible or measurable effects. prove it with a test or its just internet BS. You can try measuring differences in resistance (or voltage drop) with a variable HV supply. Prove it with a double blind test or its superstition.

I frequently put the same or several similar component on all contacts of a rotary switch substitution box to see if the guy can "hear" the difference when I switch positions:) Same with different types of coupling caps:)) you guys should try stuff like that. Have someone else do the switching and write down the reactions from the player and the switch positions. Adjust the ac supply to the same value with an isolation transformer between each test. You might be surprised how much the AC supply to your house or shop changes.

I think you will be WAY unimpressed with the results. You just might start selecting components according to their specifications, form factor and cost;)

I know:) I'm a jerk for dissing people that pay 3.00us for an inferior version of a .05us component:) Spend that money on a quality speaker or transformer!! Or hardware, something that actually makes your amp better. Not hipster electronic components! Use 1 watt CF in the preamp for low noise and MF flameproof in the power supply. Best of both worlds. Of course, if you play metal, you want MF, if you like hot dogs, you need mustard caps, if you play Reggae or Buffett covers you want orange drops or tropical fish caps;)
