Jealous!

Treat it with care, first do no harm if you restore it, or sell it unmolested. The Citation transformers are some of the finest ever made, up there w/ Marantz, Quad, MacIntosh, it's a big part of their prestige. They were made by Heyboer BTW, that's what I read on IIRC DIYA.

If you keep it it's worthy of a nice tube pre-amp, and very, very strange that the old-timer didn't have one. I can't imagine he was running an ipod or a DAC with digital volume control w/ it. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth but you might want to go back and ask. If he has the Citation pre it'd be a terrible shame to split them up as it's: "one owner" "matching year" matching "patina" - sound silly but it's serious stuff to collectors. Offer to buy it - borrow the dough. Also I doubt you want to just stick an ipod into it either. if you have no plans to get a tube pre you should really sell it to an aficionado.

FYI

That is a great looking amp. I also use a Dynaco st70. I also have a couple of Heathkit w5m for rebuild. Rebuild it and get a nice vintage tube preamp for it. You will never want to listen to new stuff again. Shoot me a price if you don't want to mess with it.
I've got blisters on my fingers!

I actually considered fixing it and giving it back. They are really nice people. The gentleman never actually used the amp himself. He acquired the unit from a departed distant relative himself. He actually called me back to tell me that he thought he might have the preamplifier somewhere in his shop. That would be cool if I could match the set back up.

It's essential you match them up. Either get the preamp or give him back the amp  He can pass away and no way the family will ever give it to you.

Anyway, don't miss the chance even if it seems rude to pester a nice old man. One day the old guy will be gone, and eventually you'll be gone, but the Citations will be together and making music for someone - likely an Asian billionaire collector.

Get the duo working, a nice turntable, and play some vinyl through a pair of Klipsch Heresy speakers-you'll be in audio heaven.

Warning, this is a derail...

Tom, that's the one. I suspect it will go over like a lead balloon around here. Kind of like asking Christians to embrace the Quran.

There is a section regarding audiophiles, amplifier performance, myths, dogma, listening tests, etc... That everyone should read IMO. Maybe I should scan it and post it? But since the book is in publication, maybe I shouldn't?

Back on track...
Electronic equipment is designed using facts and mathematics, not opinion and dogma.

On giving it back...I can understand this urge. He meant for you to have it. Be graceful and accept this magnificent gift. Sometime good things happen for no particular reason. I believe the giver is happy it found a good home.

You should not fix it and give it back. You should fix it and keep it. You should not sell it. That's my 2¢.

Just happen to have a set of Klipsch speakers in my possession already! They have been GREATLY underutilized in conjunction with the cheap ass modern junk I have now.lol  My wife and I are going to pay the couple a visit soon. Talk about Karma.....my wife knows this couple from doing their lawn with her ex husband. They had a lawn service nearly 20 years ago. I met the old fella at work. Weird how things happen. My wife and I are medically trained. We will help this old couple if we can......They have one daughter that lives far away.
