Dirty Power from Genset

Post by skyboltone »

This is a scope trace of the power coming out of my Coleman genset, with which I run my power tools as well as test equipment at the bench. I live on a boat and have rented a ocean freight container for a shop.

For reference, here's a 60 hz waveform out of my HP200C audio generator.

Clearly, what I've purchased here is an alternator with an AC driver designed by Moe, Curley and the other guy.

1) Is there any use trying to clean this up with a power conditioner?
2) I could spend a couple of hours making up a scheme of what I got here. Does anyone feel qualified to help me design a new output driver setup?
3) I could sell this POS and see if I can find an actual generator someplace to replace it with?
4) Leave well enough alone and use it?

Thanks in advance for the replies

Is this under load? It might clean itself up when loaded? Just a thought.

About 1000 watts on a 2150 rated genset. I put a .056 film cap between neutral and ground because there was 60 volts between them in spite of the claim on the front of the set that the neutral and ground were bonded. The cap knocks it to about a volt and also seemed to tame the shape just a bit but I have no idea why.

should be zero potential between between a bonded neutral and ground

to me that would be the first thing to investigate

especially if the manufacturer says its bonded

It may be time to take the covers off and check thier wiring. I'm an aircraft tech, and we have to put a filter cap on the alternators on piston engined small airplanes, even though it's rectified to DC. ADF receivers have a whine from the alternator, but I'm not sure if it's from the brushes on the slip rings, or the rectifier's diodes.
