Quick, easy MXR GT-OD/Wylde Overdrive 18 volt mod.

Post by GoneShootin »

After trying one of my MXR Wylde Overdrives at 18 Volts I liked what I heard enough to see if it could handle it without modding. So I ended up finding this:
Frank Berdini asks: Can the MXR GT-OD run on 18 volts?
JT: Replace power filter capacitor C9 with 100MF, 25V rated part or higher. C9 comes from the factory spec’d at 16V only, this is the only part that will be stressed by using 18V.

So since the Wylde Overdrive is based on the GT-OD, I took the chance that the voltage ratings of the components were the same and swapped out C9. So far, so good. I did the swap back in October and I use one of the pedals twice a week at practice where it is left plugged in to my power supply for 3 or 4 hours at a time. And the tone? Much more aggressive than running 9 volts. More grunt, more growl, more good!

Pretty much any opamp based overdrive/distortion can be run att higher voltage, as long as you check that the elctrolytic caps can take it. The rest of the components should have no problem with 18V or even higher.

Hmm, interesting. I may have to mod some of my other dirt boxes.....
