Polystyrene capacitors...

Post by dehughes »

Hello again,

Does anyone here know where I can find Mallory SX polystyrene axial lead capacitors in the 50pf or 500pf value? (or something close to those values) I'm kinda stuck as far as locating these....but I KNOW they are out there...

THANKS!

I've been having trouble finding them too. I bought 100 of them in 300pF off eBay out of Germany, but I haven't had much luck finding 470pF or 500pF values.

These things also make killer bright caps in Fender amps in the 47-50pF and 100pF values.

The best I seem to have is here:

It is the silverish cap in the tone stack.

These things are really smooth. I have a saved search on eBay looking for anything that comes close to Styroflex, but mostly come up dry.

Steve, are they the silver looking ones that usually have a clear style shrink wrap on them? If so, I may have a box or two of them. I'll check tomorrow.

I bought some of these a while back at the Parts Connexion.

This is the link for the polystyrenes- http://www.partsconnexion.com/catalog/C ... sFilm.html

They do sound smooth but they are definitely fragile. I hope this helps if you are still looking for them.

how about 470 pF 600V? Seems close enough:

otherwise you might look for old stock, out of the way places, near equivalent values, etc. I found a couple 510pF 500V (close enough to use as a 470-500pF) recently. Maybe for a future Vox project or something.

Ken at Turretboards.com has those in a variety of values. I think only one value is listed on the site under NOS, but I recall an email from Ken that mentioned other values. I use the 560 pF ones almost exclusively in tone stacks. Muy suave!

Cool, guys...thanks! I managed to find some 50 and 500pf values so I'm set for now, but I'll keep these places in mind for the future! Thanks for being diligent and resurrecting an old thread.
