Twisted Tweed Bassman

I've been jonesing for a Tweed Bassman, ever since I watched this video:

But I've never been one to leave well enough alone. I started thinking about a Bassman preamp into JJ E34L's (not EL34). Now many of you will say "Well, that's pretty much a JMP50."

But I want a Bassman 4x10 cab, tube rectifier, and maybe reduced NFB. Perhaps go full heresy and combine an Ampeg-style reverb.

Just love the Bassman clean tones and bass response, but looking for a little smoother creamy breakup.

Anyone done something similar?

my fave lately are kt88, the design is flexible, the only difficulty with the verb is mixing after the tone stack, try and keep the 4x10

Some 20+ years ago, I lived out in CA. Used to go see this cat Randy Rich and the Ravens. Randy is a bluesman, the real deal. He a played an old Tweed Bassman and a real-deal, absolutely played to death '51 Tele. That beautiful old guitar and Tweed amp with his hands made a sound I still haven't forgotten. Just pure singing tone! I bought Kuehnel's analysis of the Bassman 5F6A circuit a few years ago just because of it (great book BTW). I wonder how 2 x 10" Greenbacks and 2 x 10" Golds criss-crossed would sound (besides loud)?

I've played an Ampeg VT-40, which is sort of Ampeg's take on the Bassman. I do think the 4x10 speakers are a big part of the magic.

I don't see any problem dropping EL23's into a 5F6A circuit... just bridge pins 1 and 8 and put in an adjustable bias. Maybe add some grid stoppers and consider larger (1k) screen resistors.

FWIW, THD's old "Plexi" model was basically a mashup of 5F6a and early Marshall in the 4x10 combo case. I think there might have been a particular Marshall he was chasing that was in the inventory of SIR or another rental house. It's maybe odd to chase a Marshall sound in a 4x10 combo unless you believe the folks who think that the Beano Bluesbreaker was one of the 4x10 versions.

Any suggestions on speakers for a Bassman? I've heard good things about the Weber DT-10, but I think I might mix it up a bit and maybe have two of them and two of some other type, maybe the 10A125.
