Re: Small 6V6 Combo w/Reverb
Thanks for the schem.
So after reading, would it be reasonable to sub in a DR power transformer, do the collection of mods, and call it a day? I understand that we're venturing away from what the PR is, but I've read good things about the combo of mods (as much as the net can provide). Or would it be simpler to plan on building a 6L6 powered DR?

Re: Small 6V6 Combo w/Reverb
Fender amp designs do differ from each other in some ways, but to a large extent, most of the larger amps from, say, the black face era are just larger versions of the smaller ones. With that in mind...
If you want something louder than a Princeton Reverb, just build a Deluxe Reverb. If that still isn't loud enough for you, then you may need to move yet again in the line. But I would suggest sticking with the standard Fender tube complements for any given amp. The magic and charm of most of these amps will be lost if you monkey with the transformers and power tubes without regard for other diffs. And once you take everything into account, you are really just building the next model up in the line anyway.
For most Fender lovers, a Princeton Reverb is perfect for home or studio, and a Deluxe Reverb is perfect for clubs and bars. If you are playing on stages, you will need something bigger, but I am no fan of the Twin Reverb, so I'd stop short of that model if it were me.

If you want a 6L6 version then you need to look at the Allen Amps schematic and layout for the Sweet Spot amp.
Attached is from Hoffman site DR/PR layout and schematic. You can use 6L6 since the specified PT is 200mA.

Re: Small 6V6 Combo w/Reverb
Fender Princetons (including Reverbs) use the same power transformer as the Champ (!!!), so using the DR tranny would be smart anyway. Most Deluxes seem to be okay with 6L6s (or at least 5881s), but if you want to option to go that route, you'be better off with a Vibrolux or Pro or tweed Bassman transformer. To make 6V6s swappable with 6L6s you'l want an OT with at least two taps to optimize the load for the tubes being used.TwoString wrote:So after reading, would it be reasonable to sub in a DR power transformer, do the collection of mods, and call it a day?
Re: Small 6V6 Combo w/Reverb
So on the train of possibly stupid posts...what would be so different between a Virbolux Reverb and a Deluxe Reverb modified to run 6L6 power tubes?
Re: Small 6V6 Combo w/Reverb
The Deluxe has 1-12 speaker, the Vibro has 2-10's. Also, one starts with "D" and the other with "V".
Once you beef up the transformers and put 6l6's in a deluxe, you basically have a vibrolux.

Mark,
I drew those layouts. Please note that they use a James tone stack & not a traditional FTS.
And note that this amp design was a response I gave for a "design" (which I have not built) for someone who wanted a jazz style amp with low wattage.

You do great work with these schematics.10thTx wrote:Mark,
