Triode section of ECF82

Post by azatplayer »

Im thinking i will just go ahead and do a single channel AC10. I cant see why i would want both channels when theyre both pentode driven.
I had an old JMI AC10 in for repairs, thats what started this thing, killer amp!
I didnt get that there was a whole bunch of difference between the EF86 channel and the pentode side of the ECF82. Got me thinking either i use an EF86 and a similar triode for the tremolo, or i could go 2 tube preamp and keep the ECF82. Saves a spot. If anything that ECF82 pentode in that amp had a little more 12AX7 character to it, to my ears.
I have some nice ef86's and ECF82's.
Having trouble locating good data on this tube, specifically the triode section.
Stated is that its a medium mu triode. 12AU7?
Its gonna drive the tremolo , so i guess i could just buld it to schemo and try a bunch of 12A_7's and see what i like.

It's closer to 12AT7 but with lower amplification factor of 35 (AT is 60) and lower internal resistance 6k (AT is 15k) transconductance is roughly same.
You could say ECF82 triode section has DNA from AT, AU and a little bit from AY. That tube was often used in PAs, pentode as driver and triode as split load PI. Global NFB usually into pentodes cathode.

Usefully, this particular ECF82 datasheet has a plate characteristics chart - to help you with setting up the stage

Also called a 6U8. The GE datasheet also has the curves.
