Re: Layout Opinions
Okay so I redid the layout again, and would certainly like your opinions on this latest version:
I swapped the V1 and V2 caps to be smaller diameter so they can sit on the board. All this will fit in a 2" chassis. The big solens on the right can sit on 1/4 standoffs on 1/8th G10, or right on the chassis using terminal strips.
I am thinking 1/4 inch standoffs on G10 would be better so I can run the PT wires under them with no worries? Is 1/4inch a tight squeeze...?
What do you guys think of the B+ runs and the grounding?
Side view of the Solens 15uF 630V, then the 10uF 630v and the 10uF 400V to check clearance on 2" chassis

Re: Layout Opinions
1/4" standoffs makes it difficult to route large wires under it, if there is a network of wiring on the underside, which there usually is. The wires just hang up on all that stuff. 1/2" is easier if you can manage it.
Re: Layout Opinions
Doesn't look like he can use 1/2" standoffs because of the fat Solens caps he wants to use in the PS.David Root wrote:1/4" standoffs makes it difficult to route large wires under it, if there is a network of wiring on the underside, which there usually is. Re: Layout Opinions
Well, I can put one washer or something on the standoff to give a little more wiggle roon but yea, its tight.
That's why I was wondering if 1/4 would be alright. I am assuming here but I can put to OT over to the side a bit and really just have the PT wires under there. The choke can be off to the side a bit too.
What else would need to fit under there?
I guess I can also put a spacer on the flange of the chassis, but thought 1/4 would be tight but would still work

Re: Layout Opinions
This is way tight. I am also rather confused. I dont get why you propose raising Solens on a board and running wire underneath?
I'm getting the impression that you want to bring in the PT wires under there, but I just don't see how that can work out.
Perhaps the large Keystone tag strips that you mentioned before would allow you to somehow make use of those huge cavities you are going to get between these caps side by side? I don't really like it but it will give you some more room to play with.
I have done some really tight builds and I find that you really have to draw absolutely everything and plan your tolerances to be able to pull it off.

Re: Layout Opinions
Maybe mounting the Solen filter bank perpendicular to the main board would open things up a bit, allow the rectifier board to be placed in the same plain as the other boards as well.

Re: Layout Opinions
Put a dog house on the outside of the chassis--you can shorten the leads up even more and save real estate on the board. Woof, woof!
Re: Layout Opinions
Jana i didnt think of that.
I could also take the R/C powrtube cathode and put it on the chassis. That would give me almost another inch of room because the mounts for the board can be moved in and there is about .250 btwn the solen and board now
Dave, i did put up as my second choice a design with the solens vertically. No one seemed to prefer it. Here it is again.

Re: Layout Opinions
Okay I just ordered a 16x8x2.5 chassis so now I have plenty of room to put the solens on a 1/2 inch standoff, or even 3/4 inch. I already have parts to build something in the original 16x8x2 so I'll just use that chassis for that. So looking at the layout with 1/2 inch standoffs under the Solens, are we looking good with the 1st design?

Looks like this was a great thread. What happened to the layouts?

Re: Layout Opinions
Sorry I didn't keep the interim layout versions once the info was in my head. Here is the most up to date build info though if you're interested:
