40-Watt Blues Jr.?

Post by The New Steve H »

A friend of mine says he loves the Blues Jr. sound, but he wants a louder amp. I'm not totally sure he knows what he likes; maybe he needs to look at more amps. Nonetheless, has anyone tried putting a BJ-type front end together with a bigger OT and power tubes?

If it were me, I'd keep the Blues Jr. output and stick Bassman preamp stuff on it!
Relax. It's SUPPOSED to smoke a little.

Never done it myself. But...had a similar question recently from one of my buddies.

I believe that a lot of the "charm" of the BJ comes from the EL84 output section. I suggested doubling up to a 4XEL84 output section to attempt to retain that character.

Cheers,
Dave O.

I think it's called either Blues Deluxe or Blues Deville.

Build 'im a Rocket.

Need an upgrade? Build a Rocket Reverb with KT-66s.

P.S. Don't forget to add a mid control knob.

Maybe, you could suggest him buying TWO blues juniors.....one for smaller gigs and two for larger gigs. Ultimate flexibility and cheaper in the long run.

IME if you start building or modifying an amp for a player, who don't know what he really wants, you end up spending a LOT of your precious time and after many moons you will both arrive at the starting point - a blues junior....cause he loves the sound of it. 8)
