New here

Post by acalan »

Hello everyone .Just joined. Been wanting to build or buy a tweed amp for some time now.Since buying one is not going to happen any time soon ,I've decided to build.I'm from Florida and Boot Hill amps is just twenty minutes away from me.Just Emailed them to see if I could get a kit tomorrow.I'll probably need some advice on this project.I may try to build the cabinet myself unless I can find one at a good price.I'm in the air conditioning field so I'm experienced with high voltages and capacitors.I have never built an amp before though. Looking forward to getting started Thanks, Alan

Welcome! I'm glad you're interested in building an amp. But you've got the wrong idea if you think building one from a kit is going to be cheaper than finding one used. If you're savvy and do very careful buying of parts, you can sometimes put together a bargain amp, but it's not easy.

You can buy Hammond organ donor amps and convert to guitar amps for relatively cheap. I just made a 5c3 from a Bell & Howell Filmosound. Certainly wasn't paint by numbers, though.

Lots of smart folks to help you on this board. Just read, read, read, and be freaking careful!

I got the impression acalan is talking about not being able to buy a REAL tweed amp, in which case I can certainly understand that. Last narrow panel Twin I saw on EBay was $10,000 and a real beater.

You're right about a kit not being cheaper than a used clone though, except maybe a Victoria.
