Some obscure caps, any of these decent, vintage, or holy?

Post by thejaf »

I'm a bit uneducated on caps, these are some from my stash that I inherited about 15 years ago, but most of the values are in lower voltage range, so I've only used them as cathode bypass, bias positions, and other lower voltage portions of the amp circuit. I've always bought mallory 150s or 715P for the high voltage apps.

Most of those are antiquated electrolytics that I wouldn't put in an amp. I would use the black Sprague 155P and the polystytrene cap (small clear cap with what looks like alumimum tucked inside, third from bottom in your pic). I used Sprague 155P's in my recent Vibroverb build and really dug them. Unfortunately a few of them got taken out and replaced with glass epoxy sealed PIO's and polystyrene's like I usually use (was chasing down issues) but the 155P's are great caps. I might stuff the ones I have back in the Vibroverb, turns out they were fine..

Polystyrene's are my favorite for small valued caps because to my ears they add no color to the sound. I've got a massive collection of Centralab made polystyrenes and I use them in everything with great success (maybe IMO but others seem to agree :D).

Siemens MKH - I believe this is a polyester.

ERO MKT 1814 - film/foil polyester
ERO MKT 1813 - metalized polyester

Siemens MKL - cellulose acetate
ERO KP1832 - film/foil polypropylene.

Sprague - paper/polyester difilm.

The little clear/silver one should be polystyrene.

The rest that have + on them are electrolytic and probably shouldn't be used.

The black sprague is a Di-film, which is a mylar film and aluminum foil. I've used plenty of those NOS, and they've all been fine. I sacrificed one by sawing it in half to verify the construction.
