General questions for a new tech working on a leslie 16

Post by jdv84usn »

I'm trying to build a cheap footswitch for my Leslie 16 to verify that it works correctly before putting a lot more money into restoration. I'm trying to analyze the schematics that I can find to come up with a parts list for capacitors and inductors and such. Particularly, I am trying to determine if a ceramic disc .01uf 1KV capacitor is what was originally used in parallel with the switch for speed control on the leslie. Any help with component identification would be beneficial, as far as types and unit clarification. On my schematic, I assume that capacitor units are in uf unless otherwise noted, and also I am having trouble with the L1. Is it megahenry or millihenry?

On the cap at the switch: Yes it appears to be .01 at 1 KV. I am guessing, but I think it's there to prevent arcing across the switch and/or loud pops at the amp when switched on .

On the inductor, general rule is: "M" = Mega; "m" = milli.

All the best.

I have been looking on mouser and can't find a passive inductor with a Mega henry unit or anything even close. But there are plenty of 1.2 millihenry models.

Mega Henry would be the size of a refrigerator.
It's got to be milli -
I think they just got the case mixed, because I'd expect the H in Henry to capitalized due to it being proper, as in a last name.

I sort of assumed that, but I was looking for some backup.

As far as the types of caps and chokes, what is the difference between a barrel and ceramic disc. Would any type work and maybe have slight variations in how well they work? I just don't want to cause any damage to my amp or start a fire or something drastic like that.

where is a barrel cap used in this? Barrel capacitors are usually reserved for •These capacitors feature a high Q-factor of greater than 10 000 which makes them ideal in operating frequency range from 0.1 MHz up to 30 MHz where high voltages and currents are present. This capacitor type can be used as replacement for fixed...

No where in that schematic are you using a ceramic Disc Capacitor.

Based on the Schematic the way they drew the symbols every Capacitor is electrolytic. Meaning it's a directionally charged capacitor. Current only flows one direction.

If all you want is a foot switch. As long as you have the correct mating connector plug it's really a simple. Most of the guts should already be present inside the Leslie. Follow the diagram and solder it up.

I agree that most are there but I would like to do every thing inside of the blue box shown on on this new picture, due to the fact that my Leslie did not come with everything inside the blue box.

OK everything in the blue box is a footswitch and the connector cable.
What part are you not sure about? the numbers refer to the pin numbers on the connectors. solder the parts in as shown.

Buy the parts and wire it as shown.

So would this (pictured) work for the other cap in the footswitch.
along with http://www.ebay.com/itm/3pk-01uf-1KV-Di ... 56481ada74 for the speed switch?

I'm working on the same thing. Any idea what the current requirements for the 1.2mH choke are?

Is this enough (2400mA), or is that overkill?

Here's what the footswitch looks like.
