Wow what are you using to connect the guitar?
Mine is dead quiet, no hiss no buzz using the apogee jam for input which smokes the Irig or the one that they sell with ampkit.
The garage band amp sounds suck but some of the models and effects are not bad in ampkit+ for $50 (upgrade packs are recommended)

This is probably not a sound you are in to but considering what Mark is going for this is ampkit with the iPhone.

I have the Garage band, ipad2 etc and I just don't see a simple way of plugging in to an iPad to garageband and applying cab simulation as well. You will be pretty squashed with a fixed impedance load on the amp as well. It sounds better if you were to use a 16 ohm load on the 8 ohm but you are at your own risk if you get tube failure.

You would be so much better off using a computer where you could apply plug ins like redwirez. You really won't find a red box/palmer type box that will compete if you want to be convincing. At least I haven't heard one.

I like using the 11r and protools, you can get some nice tones and it makes recording/writing a breeze.

I have never heard an iso cab that would make you safe for late night recording.

If you want to use your tube amplifier the Iso cab is your best option as well as safest.
unless you double wall it and only turn it up as much it will allow it's probably to loud.

Going directly with a line out into the ipod, iphone, computer, is all risky and the end result is most likely less then what you are hearing with your ears before the processing.

Using processing inside the computer to get your tone is probably your best best for late night tracking then reamping that dry signal to a guitar amp during the day and recording the actual tone you want the performance to have.

The problem with plug ins and protools, They still don't sound passable if the instrument is a feature in the mix... and he has Garageband, not Protools. I doubt he wants to invest $10K on new software.

bottom line.. be prepared to compromise and then make it better in the morning. if you can get a stereo Left and Right in during tracking. you could probably be as well off just running a direct box clean into the computer then into a POD to get some processed distortion into the computer. The advantage to this over plug in's is also that you can hear the tone while you track, not just playback.

I was just hoping to run the guitar the pedals then to the amp and into iphone or iPad GarageBand. Pretty much by passing the speaker in the amp.

To my mind the Amp sims are always missing balls, so I understand the dilema.

Garage Band is rather limited in EQ department so you may well be frustrated with your proposed amp line-out solution as these things will thing will effect your "tone":
- the speaker acts as a "filter" and if you listen to a line out signal you will hear things that a speaker would filter out
- there is a lot of really painful sound going on above 6kHz and, along with other mess, it all gets let straight through. You can use extensive EQ to save the day, but as far as I know Garage Band does not have a five or six band parametric with variable Q and Hz.
- the speaker is a reactive load. Without some form of inductive-load (I hope that is the right word) or speaker simulation the result will not be what you are used to hearing.

As mentioned above the Palmers are designed to sound and react like a speaker, they have a small induction coil and some basic switches for EQ. Personally I prefer to radically EQ the Palmer signal and it is different for each amp. I have never tried them with Garage Band, if I get time and remember I will do a test.

Maybe in your case the iso-box really would be more productive with your set up, or does the new Garage Band for the i-products have a decent EQ now?

The point that husky was making is that with the DI or Speaker SIM Load Boxes you tend to run your amp at higher power than usual. That can wear out the tubes faster. Most amps should be able to take, or even enjoy, the stress.

Hope this helps a little,
best, tony
