Preamp voltages.

Post by leadfootdriver »

What are the sound differences between a plate voltage of say 165V compared to 267V in a preamp section?

I was thinking about re-doing my little project amp to an express preamp circuit, but the power tranny from the amp I converted was selected originally for 1-12ax7 and 1-el84. I added a 12ax7, and did a Marshall type 3 gain stage with a cathode follower driven tonestack into a fixed bias single el84.

What do you think?

Much less clean headroom. Less gain. In an Express type build, I'm guessing it won't sound right. Not that it will necessarily sound bad...just not anything like an Express.
