Volume pot with Mains power switch?

Post by Dingleberry »

Hi.

I'm converting old tube radio to guitar amp for my friend.
I'm able to re-use the power transformer and choke and cabinet and chassis and some other parts probably too.

I was thinking also recycling the volume pot/mains power switch combination. Then no extra holes will have to be drilled to the chassis and I can retain the original looks of the amp.

My question is: Will the power switch induce ac line hum to the signal path because of the close proximity? Or will the pot's grounded metal casing act as a shield effective enough?

It should be fine. However with that said it does depend on the quality of parts and chassis material. Make sure you have a solid ground.

I'll give it a try.

With SE amps good grounding is important.
What amazed me it has aluminum chassis. It's a radio from the early fifties.
I'll post some pics when I get to my workshop.
