layout 101?

Post by tomrasdf »

So, I've decided to do something silly and am going use an old Gregory combo as a doner to build an 18 watt Liverpool. The chassis, however, is rather cramped and does not have nearly the vasts tracts of land required for the typical layouts. I've read all of Gerald Weber's thoughts on layout from his books so I know some of the basics (don't wrap and unshielded grid wire around the heater wire), but I'm still not all 100% confident in my ability to work up an efficient, quiet layout in the space available knowing what I know now. Is there an authoritative resource out there that has all the "Dos & Don'ts" of layouts? I'm most concerned about power supply and transformer placement and proximity to eachother/everything else, as there's plenty of room for the preamp/PI circut in the chassis. Thanks.

Also, while I have some ears: Anyone know of a 5F1 Champ forum out there? I've been looking for one with no luck.

For Tweed amp build support, including the Champs, try:

Thanks for this great thread. I'd also like to get more into layout issues.
Let's hope

Meanwhile, take a look at this:

People gave me great advice as to how to properly layout my Champ.
It works and sounds great, hum free. Even with bad solders

The old Ampage forum has a ton of info too.

All the best.

One handy trick is to orient the preamp tube sockets so pins 4/5 (heaters) are toward the back of the chassis, not the circuit board.

Pins 4 & 5 Orientation

Post by David Root »

That's standard vintage Fender practice. 4 & 5 are the ends of the heater coil, 9 is the center. Why would that orientation make a difference?

It makes it easier to wire up the heaters so that you can push the heater wires into the chassis fold at the back of the amp away from signal wires.

Keep AC with AC and DC with DC as far as bundling wires.
