4x12 cab wiring
I have a cab with four 16 ohm celestions and was wondering if any of you had ever wired such a cabinet in parallel to get 4 ohms. How would this effect the sound from as it is wired in series-parallel at 8 ohms total?

Re: 4x12 cab wiring
No, but I run my 2204 to two 2x12 cabinets with two 16 ohm Blackbacks in parallel in each cab, so I have essentially the same thing but in two cabs instead of one.
Sounds great to me, but I like two cabinets, it gives a more spacious sound if they're separated by about 10 feet or so, I think.
How that compares with one 4x12 in series-parallel, or parallel-series, I would say the 4x12 is more of a focused in your face impact. Two 4x12s would probably be the best of both worlds! The famous full stack.
Difference between 4 ohms and 16? Depends on your OT. Lots of folks say there is a slight difference if the 4 ohm OT is tapped off an 8 or 16 ohm winding, or it is a 4 ohm full winding, in other words the OT sounds best off its full coil impedance.
There doesn't seem to be any math or physics behind this though, same as the difference between series-parallel and parallel-series connection in a 4x12, but there is a difference in tone there too.

Maybe I'm just tired today but how do you get four 16 ohm loads in series-parallel to produce 8 ohms?gary sanders wrote:I have a cab with four 16 ohm celestions and was wondering if any of you had ever wired such a cabinet in parallel to get 4 ohms. How would this effect the sound from as it is wired in series-parallel at 8 ohms total?
Best to get it to match the output impedance of your amp whether 16 or 4.
I hate to say it but speakers are dumb - they seldom know how they are wired. They just work with whatever they get.
Re: 4x12 cab wiring
yes... the results depend on the speakers, wattage, and the amp that is pushing them. It's such a subjective question it's hard for me to answer. I can't say it's always the best way or never used it's just another way of doing things.
Marshall 1960 cabs have switches on them so you can pick your impedance.
here is generally how things are wired

Impossible! 4, 16, or a pair of 8s.
I have wired them all kinds of ways, and I decided to keep them all wired 16 S/P because simple is better, and most everything else might be too subjective for a single guy.
