Re: Grounding question

Post by amplifiednation »

I have a similar question. My guitar is humming pretty bad on all my amps and only stops when I face the pickups 90 degrees to the amp. The hum goes away with the guitar volume down, and stops when I touch the strings.

I am a stickler for this noise and i want it to stop. Would you say my guitar isn't properly grounded?

Are there ways to get a better ground connection to the AC line, like an isolation transformer or one of those big surge protectors?

I shielded the cavity of my last les Paul and that seemed to help with that guitar but my current LP is not shielded. I thought that might help, especially if I did the pickup cavities.

Let me know your thoughts. I have posted a similar question and thought it was because of the wiring in my basement, but I had an electrician come in upon suggestion and said things looked cool.

I have florescents but they hum barely gets better with them off. I don't dare play a single coil guitar, which stinks because I am dying for a new strat

Most guitars will hum worse when standing near an amp.

If you will notice, when you turn your body to a certain angle from the amp, the noise will just about disappear.

This is just inductive coupling of the guitar pickups and the amp.

The flourescent lights will be picked up by the guitar as well as the amp.

So one of the ways to make it quieter is to stand farther away from the amp, and angle your body to the quietest spot when holding the guitar.

That's pretty much the facts of life with these old tube amp designs.
