What amp for my next build?

Post by Dingleberry »

Hi again.

I have made myself a terrible problem.
What amp to build next?
I have an old cage amp chassis and I don't want to dithc the original looks, including the frontpanel.
It has two volumes and 3 tone controls, named: bass, treble, freq corr.
And it will be a single input one channel amp.

So my terrible problem is I need an amp design with two volume controls,
(vol and master) and three tone controls (treble, bass, middle/cut/presence).
Power amp is gonna be p-p 2xEL34/6L6/KT66.
My PT gives about 330Vac with no load so B+ will probably be something like 440-450V under load I think. No tube rectifier, because lack of the 5V winding....

I don't want to build a VOX/Wreck type amp, I have a chassis and transformers for that project already waiting (it will have ef86 and top boost channels) Same thing with dumble type amp.

So fenderish/marshallish would be a good candidate?
What more is left?

I was thinking the Dr.Z EZG50 without reverb. i.e. Super reverb minus reverb. Is that a super? Also matchless clubman came into my mind but there might be problems with the 6sh7 pentode... What about Rocket with KT66 aka. 66 Rockster? Are they kind of more in the VOX territory soundwise?
How about those brownface/blonde fenders? Aren't they famous for great cleans.

I want good cleans and nice low gain grit/meduim od.
Throw in some ideas so we'll see what is gonna happen.

What about an Hiwatt ?

here all the documentation you can desire to have

http://hiwatt.org/

http://hiwatt.org/tech2.html

http://hiwatt.org/DIY/

you can use only one input and put the presence control in the back panel or inside the amp
