preamp board material

Post by rawnster »

Where do you get your board material (G-10)? I've ordered my last supply from Turretboards (Watts Tube Audio). I'm tired of the 3 week wait time. Ridiculous. I know the usual places (cedist, hoffman, etc...). Unfortunately, they don't carry the color selection that Turretboards carry. I'm usually ordering black, red, or something other than the typical faded green.

Thanks!

Ron for the green (natural) I get that from McMaster-Carr. Otherwise I order from CE distributions dealers or AES for non dealers for perforated boards in blue, red, yellow, green.

Yeah www.turretboards.com is getting terrible with their orders and many mistakes.

Thanks Mark. cedist only seems to carry pre-drilled sheets of G-10. I don't see on their site any blanks with no holes. Perhaps I should just buy some large sheets and slowly whittle away at it. I found this distributor: http://www.jjorly.com/g10_fr4_sheet_material_price.htm. A little spendy though.

I completely overlooked Tubedepot. They've got some black and red.

I just use electrical mains switchboard material from a local electrical wholesale supplier. It is rated for several kV and is pretty durable and heat resistant etc. Plus its modern stuff. And its relatively cheap.

I get red predrilled boards in various colors from http://www.tubesandmore.com/ or CE.

Hey Dave, i agree. Hoffman ships orders super speedy. Love that about them. Don't care much for the green stuff though. Be nice if they'd carry a better selection.

My Turretboard order finally came in yesterday. As expected, a 3 week wait.

RE:turretboards.com yea same here, about 4.5 weeks. Also it seems some used turrets pulled out of another board somehow keep getting mixed up in the "new turret" bin because about 5% of my turrets are chewed up from pliers and the bottoms are un-mountable again.

For someone without a 'stash' of stuff, this is annoying when you plan a build and then suddenly you're 5 turrets short, and it takes 4 weeks to get any.

Yeah, I hear your pain. I've had several heated email exchanges with Ken at Watts Tube Audio about this. Can't really believe he's still in business.

Ron, just order from mcmaster. They have many colors and types of board material to choose from. I buy the 12 x 24 sheets and cut it up with my tile saw. Mcmaster is super fast on shipping and has reasonable prices.

Looks like good stuff for tube amp boards:

GPO3 is A fiberglass reinforced polymer laminate. This material is the industry standard for flame arc/track resistant electrical components. GP03 also offers an excellent combination of high strength, flame resistance, and low smoke, flame, toxicity generation. GP03 is a NEMA approved material per NEMA rocedure NEMA LI-1 Combines high arc and track resistance, highly flame resistant. For use on 2500+ voltage equipment. 94V-O flame retardance rating. 22,100 PSI lexural strength. Red in colour GPO-3 Glass Polyester Laminate < BR> GPO-3 laminate performs well in electrical applications that require high arc and carbon track esistance as well as flame resistance, physical strength, and moderate heat esistance. Grade GPO-3 laminate is used extensively in the making of phase and end barriers, insulating supports, bus bar supports and mounting panels in switchgear and other types of electrical apparatus. Grade GPO-3 is a UL recognized product with a temperature index of 120 degrees celsius electrical and 140 degrees celsius mechanical. Grade GPO-3 is produced in three standard colors red, black, and white and is molded in thicknesses of 1/32?to 2 used for general purpose electrical and/or mechanical applications where low cost is desired. GPO-3 can withstand higher tmperatures than GPO-1 or GPO-2, and has better electrical characteristics

I've had good luck with online metals for specialty metals, but didn't know they sold board material.

Yes I agree with you guys, I don't understand how and why Ken at Turret board is still in business, his shipping time is getting crasy, I stop buying from him, his price are not the best either, but he had a nice selection of products, to bad for him !
