AA23 conversion

Got one recently.... kind of like it the way it is.... but I did want a front panel input... so I removed the rotary switch and all the other inputs except the MIC ... Not i'm into motorboating territory.

I tried connecting the MIC input directly to pin 5 of the 6EU7.... without changing anything else. No go...
Then I removed everthing from the V1B side and connected the input to pin 8 thru the stock .1 cap...... still putt, putt, putt...

Any ideas what I missed? It sounded pretty good before I ripped out that rotary selector...

Bad electrolytics is my first guess, seconded with excessive lead length somewhere. Post some pics.
