diode clippers in balance with the right amount of gain is what we've been hearing for a very long time. putting a good sounding overdriver pedal ( w/ diode clippers in it ) in front of the preamp or using the right balance of diode's in the amp circuit is about the same thing. Jose Arredondo and many other early modders from the day understood the process and utilized it in their amp mods. in my post ( 2 ch plexi w/EVH & ACDC Tone ) I use the concept with a Plexi style circuit that you can switch in & out.

I like the schematic there.. my problem is a dual ganged pot that appears to feed two sets of output tubes mussing up my install strategy on an amp designed by someone in Tokyo. The closet is the bedroom, and you stand in the toilet to shower!
lmao
Damn I like this amp, and I was hoping to destroy it. I am not smart enough.
I had planned to |--<---->---0 from the wiper on the gain control. Seemed easy enough.

iknowjohnny wrote:Well, this thread prompted my curiosity because i owned a few marshall diode clippers including a jubilee and jcm switchers. And i liked those amps. But when i started making my own marshall in an attempt to make the ultimate marshall for ME at least, i had a chance to plug into a marshall 800 switcher and compare after not having owned or played one for years. And the tone sounded thin and crappy compared to my creation. I thought maybe it was just a bad one because i don't remember them sounding bad at all.
So today after reading this thread i had to try it. My amp sounded like that 800. Yep....if you make it all tube and do a good job of it, diodes aren't going to sound as good. I will say tho my jube sounded much better than the 800's, and even a 900 i had sounded very good. Those 2 had a different diode scheme tho. And next to my current creation they would probably also sound thin to some degree. I do however like the diode sound in some ways. And i could easily make it switchable. But the amp sounds much better w/o and i already have too many switches.
This is pretty much my experience. Although the best amp I liked with diode clipping was the Carol-Ann Revo. The only draw back was that it would not feedback and bloom like an all tube amp. The amp sounded great, but had a different feel, for sure...
I installed two opposing diodes (N914) on the second stage of my Egnater 20. You can almost TALK LOUDLY over it, the gain makes it into a sweet sweet sweet BF sounding amp at noon, and a monster thump grinding thick molten Hell when cranked beyond about 6.5.
I made 3 insert cables with different diode arrangments so I can swap them around in the loop when recording. This is too much fun. I have tone cables now.. goofy!

I had a JTM 60 and I thought it had great tone.....but I never cranked the gain past 6....not into buzz saw distortion.....I like the sound of that power amp working....Whats better snubber resisters or diodes........Probably diodes......but I'd be curious about opinions from high gain amp builders.
Since this amp never gets loud enough for drums, I was just as happy to make it a high gain amp to record with. Clean is out of the question, but all the colors of distortion are wonderous. I want a Renegade now, there's one across town.
I'm very likely to put this arrangment in most of my amps, and make it switchable.
