Project: Music Man RD-100 Mods on the Dirt Channel

Post by Geoff J »

I am wanting this amp to be a project, as I got it way on the cheap and want to hone my skills. I have amps that I already like and use professionally, so I'd appreciate any refrain from suggestions such as, "If you don't like the amp, then sell it and get a real amp", as there are plenty of testimonies from people who have modded these amps, but the music man forum is painfully slow and tough to get any input on

Hey, I have a schematic & BoM of it in pdf to forward in the event anyone wants to help.

The OD is kinda buzzy & muddy, plus it is tough reconciling the clean channel w/the dirt channel. Once the low end is dialed in on the clean, the dirt gets all farty & muddy

I do understand one of the most conventional mods is swapping the mid pot to 10k, but I m not sure if that reconciles the od w/the clean ch.

Not sure what is required

It's a great place to clean everything out from the power forward, and build a great frontend. One of the BEST in my opinion. I love those for power.

These things sound fantastic with a wide variety of preamps, pretty much anything I ever slaved them to.

It's a great power section for a Dumble thing.

Huge sounding amps! I love them straight for clean.

Sweet, thanks !

I have a few questions regarding your last post

What circuit schematics should I be looking at ?

Where can i find those schematics ?

Is there a BoM available ?

Thanks again

Look in the Dumble files forum. You should prod arond on YouTube and the Dumble forum to get an idea of what sounds like what.

I have only used MM power by inserting at the loop, direct out slaving from other heads.

Dumbles aren't beginner projects. I am less than a beginner. I change caps, and shock myself. Once you get all the parts in the right place, there are layers of complexity to setting one up.

Maybe someone will chime in with a stand alone section you could build.. someone has to have made a Dumble preamp?

In the context of MusicMan/Dumble conversions; usually what happens is that the entire amp is gutted leaving the only the chassis, power transformer and output transformer as donors. The intent is to use the most basic sections of the high voltage Musicman style DC power supply in a Dumble style build, as did HAD.

I incorporated this style of power supply in a build months back.

Would recommend it as a first build though, not really.

Do a search under the Dumble Discussion section using these filters: musicman
