DuraTex acrylic coating

Post by andrew »

Hi, If you are terrible at tolexing here is a product that works beautifully. I used it on a junked Deville cabinet that I chopped and converted to head cab. It covered some woodworking flaws also. http://www.acrytech.com/catalog.asp?prodid=547778.

That sounds pretty neat. I have heard of people having bed-liner material sprayed on as well. How is the coverage of the product? I noted that it was $52 for a gallon. How much would a gallon cover in "real world", ie waste from roller.....

I did a 2-12" cab and a head both with lots of coats and I have half a gallon left over. I put on more than was needed.

Care to post a closeup of the finish?
How does it feel compared to the typical vinyl "tolex"? I'm curious to know if it is smooth or scratchy feeling and if you think it will scratch what it's been placed on top of.
Thanks.

It is not as smooth as tolex but not like that black scratchy stuff Crate used to use. It has a hard, bumpy feel.

I always wondered how something like this would feel/hold up... Boogafunk does something similar with their cabinets, though they call it a "proprietary coating" and it may differ from the material posted above. To me there's just something (patience) about a good tolex job... that I lack... So I've considered going this route...

I had a friend that manufactured a line of amps a few years ago.
He used some kind of bedliner coating and it was bullet proof.
Very durable.
He did use voidless plywood as well.
The grill cloth he used was also some realy tough stuff that would not rip or tear.
He even had trouble cutting it for the cabs.

I did the bed-liner stuff on a head cabinet, very toxic stuff to work with. Doesn't take a lot to do a whole head cabinet.

No that is my old Peavey cab with Vintage 30's. The 16 ohm Sheffields that were in there were terrible.
