Parallel 2 x 50W tube amps??

Post by mbmich »

Does anyone know if you can parallel the outputs (secondary OT side) of two amps together, without letting the smoke out of the amps??

If so, would the speaker impedance need to be half that as selected on each amp, say each amp is set to 8 ohms, would the speaker need to be ideally 4 ohms?

Pretty sure you cannot do that... My gut reaction sez that there are a whole host of problems caused by hooking things up that way... but I dont have a technically competant answer for you other than to say if it were me, I would not attempt it.

Not easily but I believe it can be done. Don't just hook them up though, there's more to it as I recall but I'd have to research it to to be reaquainted.

Instead just run the two amps in stereo by paralleling the inputs. Same SPL I'd guess. Might sound gooder who knows don't cha know?

Hi Dan, the two amps are built as a stereo pair in one head, however occasionally I want to be able plug the thing into one mono speaker box (for convenience) and still benefit from the sound from each channel, which can both simutaneosuly operate.

If anyone could conclude whether you can just parallel the OT outputs or not and what the implications/considerations might be, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

I believe there's a way to do this, but don't ask me how. I say this because Carvin makes a stereo tube power amp that can be bridged for mono. Maybe there's a way to dig up their schematic.

There are pics of the earliest 100w marshall amps that were build with two 50 w OT's. It is possible but I do not know any details. Good luck!
