I like the tone and sustain of the lighter weight tuners over heavy ones. It is a lively sound compared to using a fathead which I find flattens out the tone. Like the effect of a light aluminum tailpiece over a Heavy Brass one. Also, I can make almost any tuner hold a tune without slipping, even very cheap ones. I do like a higher gear ratio though and you usually don't get that on a cheapo.selloutrr wrote:Why would lite weight tuners = better tone?
Weight isn't the issue in a tuner. Good tuners are selected for the ratio of rotation and the ability to hold the tension without slipping.
Weight on the headstock can be benificial for adding to sustain.
Several places sell a weighted clamp that clips on the head stock to increase the weight and sustain.
IMHO any quality tuner I don't have to redrill holes to use is the way to go.

well these caps
well these caps may help you if you dont just have the tone controll on 10 . on 10 they are not in use . i think that sound from a electric guitar is more about dampening than resonance , thats why you can hear the advice that a bone nut gives a better bass sound , well thats with open strings of course ,like a steel guitar , if you press down on the fretts it will not matter . and too hear a differense in metal ? metal is still so hard that the difference will to difficult the hear , well i think its easy to listen and be pulled with the haze of corksniffers and wood knobs experts . the sound power transforming of the string i have heard is only 4% .
nikel plated strings gives more output than other steel strings .
the best thing is to try yourself . with fresh ears . listen for long ,at one time make your listening dull , even more if its loud .
others advice is a guiding line , but you only know it if you take time to try things out ,

Re: well these caps
I know in theory that this is supposed to be the case BUT in practice I (and others) find that it is not true. The caps STILL affect the tone even when the pot is on 10.breakfastbuddy wrote:well these caps may help you if you dont just have the tone controll on 10 . on 10 they are not in use .,
circuit check
Just checking to see if I have this correct. As i understand it there were at last two primary methods to wire the 3 way toggle, the simple way and the
more complex way. In either instance the shielded wire is used to carry the ground signal. Does this look ok.

I could not quite tell from the pic if the left hand method is as I have drawn it.

Thanks for that link angelodp. That was very informative. I've learned more from that one vid than from hours of reading (Never been the fastest book learnerangelodp wrote:But my thread.... he who hesitates. No worries they are around.

Re: Les Paul re-build
Hi, I went to bed thinking about all the cool info in this thread but couldn't help thinking there is a more worthy guitar in your collection, angelodp! Not saying the epiphone is no good, I love them, I play a stock epiphone '58 korina explorer! No, what I mean is this, you actually already like the way your guitar sounds! My advice, grab out that guitar you have in your closet which you don't like how it sounds and apply all the excellent advice in this thread to it. You'll end up with 2 guitars you love!!
You might get a 10% improvement in your perception of the epiphone LP, but I guarantee $300 spent on that 'other' guitar will yield 80% improvement, unless a) you don't have another guitar b) it really can't be helped! (see end of this post for my list of guitars which can't be helped)
Quick example of what I mean,
My first guitar, Session strat copy, still own it but you wouldn't recognize it, new pickup arrangement, floyd rose, single volume with coil tap, big frets, all done myself. Shit guitar made good!
Yamaha Pacifica, not great guitars, but belonged to my late brother so have to keep right
? Well, I drop in 2 new Carvin humbuckers with coil taps, and voila! Shit guitar made good!
Epiphone '58 Korina explorer, loved the look & sounded good in shop, got home a plugged in, a little disappointed. Not much bass response, and a few intonation tuning issues, felt a bit of a sucker...until I recorded with it!
Obviously I fixed the intonation etc, but all the things I didn't like about jamming with it in the room, translated to an excellent recorded tone! It sounded brilliant! the lack of bass meant I'm not EQing and compressing the bee-jesus out of it to make it fit, it has a real classic vibe to it with alot of great harmonics and transients coming through which I didn't really hear through the amp.
My point, good sounding guitars are great in the right context, and sometimes are just waiting for their moment to shine....Shit guitars can be good guitars with new pickups.
Also, just to add to the tone debate,
My list of guitars which can't be helped; EVERYTHING WITH A CRAP NECK ON IT!
40% of the tone of the guitar is the neck woods/truss rod setup. Boring yes, but just swap the neck on a US strat with a cheap soft wood copy and you will see what I mean, no pickup can save a crap neck!!! [/quote]

Re: Les Paul re-build
I'll have to put in a plug for the Wolfetone Dr.V set. I will say they can be a little on the bright side for some. It really depends on where you want the guitar to go soundwise. I will also add that the "MapleFlame" mod as it's referred on the LPF does help bass clarity and overall note definition. Both of these I think will help w/ your imports tone.
Hope this helps.

Re: Les Paul re-build
I'd also like to put in my 2 cents for Wolfetone pickups. I'm partial to his Legend set, but his Dr. vintage set is really great as well (I've got the Dr V's in a 335 that I love) To me the Legends are it in most of my guitars. They just hit the spot for me. Of the few holy grail guitars that I've been lucky enough to play through the years these pickups have been as good or better to my ears.....then again it could just be my ears.
Either way Wolfe is worth checkin out.
