Hey Guys...I'm new here so bear with me...

Post by w18764560 »

I picked up a 67/68 Bandmaster head, and am wondering if it is possible to turn it into something worthy of time and money.
Not sure but it maybe the AB568? How can I tell, the paper is missing from the inside of the head and I am no expert. I have two 6G7-A Blondes and I was wanting to maybe have a Blackface or at least something worthy of using. Is it possible?
Thanks in advance.

A comparison of the bias section would be the way to see what you've got. Early '68 Band Master amps were still the AB763 circuit. IMO these are great amps. I've had my '67 for nearly 30yrs.

Welcome to the forum. I don't mean to sound preach-y but I have some strong opinions about Fenders.

I guess I am not clear on what you mean by "worthy". Just because it has silverface cosmetics doesn't mean that it doesn't have the blackface circuit. The differences are subtle if at all soundwise on the early silverface amps. When they got away from the cloth wire, it created problems with lead dress because the wire they chose doesn't stay where you put it and lie flat against the chassis, but even those amps can sound really good.

This amp can be a great sounding Fender with the right speakers.

Start with what it sounds like instead of what it looks like. What is it lacking to your ears?

67-68 Bandmaster probably still has the cloth wire and blue molded caps. If that is the case, for all intents and purposes, it is a Blackface. If you don't like it, sell it and buy something you do like.
There are plenty of lame amps out there that are very deserving of being gutted, but I kinda hate to see it happen to a nice old Fender.
That said, I've been guilty of doing this myself, but now I kind of regret it.

Oh, and welcome!
