Anybody ever run a Deluxe Reverb into a Greenback?
Im going to build a DR clone. I am just trying to figure out if I should get it in a head or combo. Considering available space and the expense, I would love to get the head and run it into my Greenback or 15 watt Bluedog. If I do this will it be a waste of time? I guess my question is how essential is the Jensen speaker for the classic Fender tone? Is the Greenback "close enough", or "forget it?"

I have clients who have run their M75 25 or 65w models with their Deluxe Reverbs with fantastic results. I usually recommend the 65w since it handles the DR with pedals better, IMO.
I've also had tweed Deluxes sound good with a V30 or H75 Scumback, just depends on what you're trying to get tone-wise.

This might interest you (got my attention) though it's a tweed, and clone, and running 6L6s, and the speaker's a clone, and....

@000steelandstone000 Scumback M25 but I've since changed the speaker to a Celestion G12H30 Anniversary. The G12H30 speaker has more bass, 3D midrange and clear treble, plus it is more efficient so the extra headroom is great for gigging.

I have done it several times in an original 66 Deluxe rev with a real green back 25 watter. It works and can sound good. But it does not sound like a Jensen at all. After a good trial, I felt it lost that Fender twang, was a little dark, not as much midrange clarity. In all a bit mushy compared to the C12n I preferred. I am talking about vintage stuff hear not the reissues. The Reissues Greenbacks sound much brighter to my ears and harsher.
YMMV

When building these tweed amps would it be better to keep with the Jensen line of speakers to get that old vibe?
In my past old Fender amps I was never impessed with Jensen speakers so that is why I am asking.
Billy I know you prefer most old Fenders to follow the stock components to achieve the correct Fender tone.

Can't say much about the BFDR yet, but I have a rebuild going on which will lead to something similar with GB. However what I can say is I have a 'heritage' (20W made in Ipswich) Greenback in my 5G9. While it was more expensive than the chinese one, it really does sound fantastic and make that amp sing. Takes a hotcake well too. You might find you have to pay around with the freq rolloff etc in the pre-amp a bit, because those fender clean low freqs can push a little GB over the edge (altho' the 25W version should hold up a lot better) - I went from 0.1uF to .047 uF coupling caps and 2.2uF instead of 25uF bypass cap in V1, which did the trick

Your right, I do prefer the vintage stuff. I like the right speaker in the right amp. In a Tweed Deluxe I like the P12Q over the P12r anyday. But, I do like Alnico celestions or such(weber) in a Tweed fender. The Green backs are a different animal though. And the Reissues are alot different and not for the better. The ASW Absolute is magic in a small Powered Tweed. Would probably work in a Deluxe Reverb too. Actually, the The reissue Jensen c12K is not bad either in a DR. But I would not think about it for a Tweed, even though it would work.M Fowler wrote:When building these tweed amps would it be better to keep with the Jensen line of speakers to get that old vibe?
