perf board basics

Post by seavote »

newbie... i've built 2 projects (guit pedals) on pcbs from pcbs laid out on internet. i'm ready to move on but i'm lost. where can i find a good book or web site on laying out a schematic on perf board and general perf board basics. yes i know experience is the best teacher(i learned that from first 2 projects) but learning the right way first and benifiting from others mistakes saves time. most new books dont deal with this maybe an old intro to electronics book? my library has none. thx to all

If you're looking for build how to's, there are a host of really outstanding sources.

http://ax84.com/ is a great site to start out on. To get a grasp on the step by step process, the AX84 P1 build guide is a very useful overall doc http://annex.ax84.com/media/ax84_m321.pdf

If you've built stomp boxes, I would recommend building one of the AX84 projects before tackling any of the T-wreck or especially Dumble projects. One big diff, is there is so MUCH more room to work in. Conversely, there is much greater chance of crosstalk and danger (higher power).

BTW, Perf board isn't made anymore, so you'd have to hunt some down. Otherwise use turretboard material, available from a number of places.

Paul Ruby's site has great info too: http://www.paulrubyamps.com/info.html; especially on how to power up your build a step at a time and not fry things: http://www.paulrubyamps.com/info.html#FirstPowerUp

With respect to laying out a schematic within a chasis, that's a bit of magic for some builds. If you're starting from absolute scatch, then good luck. If you're copying an existing build, do web searches. The trainwreck builds didn't really hit full stride until a couple of great folks here took oodles of detailed internal chasis photos.

One site that has a bunch of low to medium-re shots is http://acplink.com/.

If you're looking for how tube amps work, that's another post: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=1340

Hope this helps.
