Amp Repair Books and DVD's recommendations

Post by oldmanmetal »

I have an electronics background (work on Espresso/coffee machines), and have done a few things on guitar amps, but want to really learn to do more. I have looked at the DVD's by Gerald Weber and Lee Jackson, as well as several books. Want recommendations from you guys to get started. Just don't want to waste my time with junk, or non-essential stuff.

This may sound silly but the best instructional course out there is this amp builders forum and either a kit sitting in front of you or a parts sourced amp you want to build.

If you are starting new then a Fender tweed Champ or Deluxe would be where to start. Most books are too advanced for beginners. I like the Tino Zottola books at http://www.tubesandmore.com/

Volume I, II and III because you can build many project amps while you learn. Also, Inside Tube Amps by Dan Torres is loaded with info but most of us agree his taste in tone is questionable.

I would like to start with some mods. I have an Epiphone Jr, and a Crate 18W. I understand these are popular to mod. The kits are more than I want to spend right now. I have some nice amps, and some custom builds built for me, but want to learn how to service asnd do mods before building an entire amp.

Ok for some ideas on valve junior mods on the home page there is mods and towards the bottom there VJR click on that for layouts and ideas to mod your amp. http://turretboards.com/

How to service amps can be found by googling.

For a good book on troubleshooting guitar amplifiers google this

Electric Guitar Amplifier Handbook by Jack Darr

It has been put back in print. There is a bootleg copy floating around somewhere if you want to check it out first before parting with your money.
