JBL D130 vs D130F in an Ampeg B15N
Hello,
My Ampeg B15N (1969) has a 15" CTS speaker (square magnet), but this one makes some cracks when I turn up the volume.
I wanted to replace it with an old JBL D130 that I have, but I don't know if it can handle the power of the B15N. I found the datasheet on the Lansing Heritage website, it's rated for only 30W... strange for such a speaker. The D130F handles much more power.
Do you know the differencies between these 2 speakers ? can I place the D130 in my B15N ?
Thank you.

The DA30 was a hifi driver, the D130F it's MI version with an enlarged magnetic gap and a gooped paper surround - better reliability, slightly worse efficiency, very similar sound.
Power ratings came and went depending on planned usage, marketing lingo of the day as well as datasheets from competitors - the D130 began as a 25-watt model and ended at 100-watt, still using the same cone assembly and motor !
According to Harvey Gerst - who designed the D130F and other great speakers while at JBL - the D130 can be used with up to 60W MI amps.

Just curious - for guitar or bass?
The D130 is traditionally a guitar speaker - extended high end, not so much bass. Other JBL drivers are traditionally recommended for bass usage, E140 for example. That said, I've always found the E130 to be a very nice sounding bass speaker for 4-string ebass because of that extended range. No mid driver is needed, and since most ebass low string is mostly 2nd harm and up anyway...

I want use this B15N with a Jazz Bass.
I perhaps have to find a D140F or E140, alnico vs ceramic...
And does someone know where I can find a recone kit for the 15" CTS ?

The D130 will be OK if you don't push it too hard.I want use this B15N with a Jazz Bass.
The 140 is less extended than the 130 and could sound muffled if used alone.I perhaps have to find a D140F or E140, alnico vs ceramic...
In France? No idea. US reconers could help you. You may for instance contact Orange County Speaker. And does someone know where I can find a recone kit for the 15" CTS ?

I've got an E-120-8 for guitar, what was the 15" version?
The motor assembly and magnet would double the weight.
some of the better ampeg tones I've heard were using 15" SRO's.
I've an old JBL recone too, but never trusted it, any more recone leads?

my bad .... the re-cone is a jensen concert.
The jbl has a pencil scrall on the back side of the cone that looks like E-145-8
15" with a similar motor to the E-120, cast frame front loading only.

I would use the D13o in the Ampeg B15n cabinet. If it was an open back cab it might be under loaded. But your cab is either ported or sealed and will provide some resistance to the cone excursion. A b15n is not a high powered amp either. It is designed to put out very clean power.
I put an old Altec 418 in mine and it sounded and performed great , much better than the stock CTS. Louder and better high end.

Don't forget.. Always check the polarity of the JBL's Many were backwards including the D-130's... Use a 9v battery the speaker should pop out + to + - to -...FWIW..Many people label the D130 to a boxier tone.. This is part of the reason why..
