Re: germanium diode
Andy, I grabbed a handful of all of the diodes I could find today. I will have to google around to find out what is actually germanium and what is of no use for you.

Re: germanium diode
Alright, found some big old 1N34 (not 1N34A) diodes. I've got about 15 here if you're still interested. $20 a piece sound good?
JK! Got any octal or nine pin sockets you could trade for?

From the webpage you just posted:
Hrmm... Not very germanium like.FWD Voltage Drop(VF): 1.0V @ 5.0 mA

Re: germanium diode
Good point. I have some somewhere. I'll try and dig them up and measure them. Maybe they rounded

Actually, the datasheet link shows they are point-contact diodes so the higher forward voltage is probably due to increased series resistance. Might sound good, might sound like crap.

Re: germanium diode
There's difference with the material, less perfect maybe, less harsh.
I've heard it said about germanium transistor too.
Surprised to hear it in a even in a clipper, the stomp box junkies aren't crazy.
I have heard that the real issue is how consistent it is, not the same purity as silicon devices.
pm me about some sockets I've got a few I can pull off and clean up a bit.
a couple different types and mounting.

Re: germanium diode
Slightly off topic, be careful not to overload your germanium diodes, especially the ones in your ears;

Re: germanium diode
Andy, I found a much larger stock of 1N34's if you're still interested. I think there are a few hundred at least..

I hadn't heard, but Cub Koda the guitarist for Brownsville Station died from kidney disease in 2000.

Re: germanium diode
Genuine OA 95 - 20 pcs... don't get more germanium than that!
20$ a piece, was it ????
Which diodes are you looking for, Andy...???

Re: germanium diode
Oa95 have very few web results, found a very nice crystal radio site.
assoc.pagespro-orange.fr/f5zv/RADIO/RM/RM34/RM34b01.html
I'm still surprised they're suddenly hard to find in my area.
I think they were 1n60, but anything in ball park will work.
The device has a response curve relative to V and ma, and it sounds good.

Re: germanium diode
Here's your data sheet, curves and all... looks like from an old Philips book..
OA 95 was typically used as a single diode AM demodulator, but is normally listed as gen. purpose rectifier

If you are seriously interested, I do have quite a bit of "antique" stuff, quite a lot of signal level tubes too, but my stash is rather unsorted after 2 house moves.

Re: germanium diode
Just saw this and thought I should register in case anyone was thinking of buying these. I order a lot of stuff from Futurlec for my effects building biz and it's worth noting that the germaniums I got from them were silicon "workalikes."Sonny ReVerb wrote:I would buy them here: http://www.futurlec.com/DiodesGen.shtml#General
They're a nickel apiece and shipping is reasonable. I've ordered from them many times. Shipping can be slow, but the price is right. Not quite American, tho...
