It won't be exact, but if you have a "standard ODS 101 non-HRM" you can get very close to this tone just by dropping the slope resistor to 75k. You could zero in even closer by lowering the V1 plates to taste (don't forget the rK's) and possibly upping the bypass caps to 10 or 25uF. Of course you need to tune down to "D" and use a Dumbleator with a good effect unit, and also having great touch and a good guitar doesn't hurt either. Bear in mind the reduced slope may limit the versatility of the amp somewhat. Easy to try just the slope change by just tacking on a 150k in parallel, you might really like it .

Agree..Gotta have the D-lator with a good EFX unit to get that tone..It en-capsulates everything with this warm in your face thing with every nuance thrown from the speaker..Happy Holidays!!

What values would you expect for OD plate resistors ?
Snubbers or pre-OD R/C treble bleed (like #40) ?

BTW the Reverb/Delay in the clips is a bit to much for my taste.
I'd love to hear the amp 'naked'.

Those clips sound great but I'd wager that I could tweak henry's amps to sound like that or even better ...

I think what we are hearing has a lot to do with it actually being recorded with nice Mic's and mic pre's wheras most of the clips are just thrown up without much planning.

I cant wait til I get my record mastered and can actually throw down some clips that sound as good as they did in the studio .

These room mic clips and camera clips just dont cut it.

Im saying that tone sounds great but I think what really makes it nice is the recording quality which is much higher than anything I've done since I dont have pro studio.

Also, I dont like to be told to shut up- at all. That is just plain rude and uncalled for.

I have plenty of clips here with great tone thats not captured as well as those studio clips with too much delay and reverb.

Don't believe in mic pre magic.

- 99% of all guitar tracks are done with sm57 or MD421 - nothing fancy.

IME a good mic and preamp - plus proper positionin of the mic - can embellish the sound of a good guitar/amp combination, but it wont turn low quality into high quality. Thats simply not true.

Conclusion: The amp in the clip sounds great and its not due to mic or mic pres magic.

That guy did record those clips in a professional studio. Not a chessy room mic with a handheld. Not a cheesy camera either.

It was Mic'd( a sm 57 is great) ran into a good preamp, etc.

Sounds like the setup had good converters.

I actually believe in the power of good converters and pre's.

If you have ever been in a studio that slaps a 57 on it and calls it good that can be ok but then you go to a studio that uses a 57 and a room mic blended into a Neve console using Apogee converters -I think you would hear a little bit of magic

Seriously, it is night and day to me once you get to that level or recording.That will make a great amp sounded like the greatest amp. Nope, Its not going to make a crappy amp sound great. Im not putting anyone or anyones amp/playing down. Im just pointing out the obvious that they were recorded insanely good(thought I think too much delay and reverb)

Back to those clips, They sound fantastic. Great player and great recording = great clip. My point is that I think a lot of the other amps around here haven't been properly represented yet.

I hope that they will soon though.

Ok I get your point.

I have a couple of (seveth circle) neve clone preamps with the original camhill transformers and a MOTU828II converter. I use a SM57 and a Peluso U47 clone as room mic.

I appreciate the warm sound of the Neve pres and prefer this over the build in clean mic pres in the MOTU, but its not like night and day. FWIW

One guy mentioned that it was close to the sound Steve Kimock gets with his dearmond, and the little SE dearmond I built does a pretty job at getting that sound.

Any ideas on how Kimock pads down the output to go to a bigger amp?

Yo funk how close is this to the ~77 you posted in the archives? I don't see a deep switch...50 or 100 watt?

I'm chasing the d thing from growing up in Nor-Cal, hearing Lindley, George et. al (and later Kimock after he quit working for boogie), That's the tone I hear in my head not the Carlton/Ford smooth jazz stuff (though Ford is from up here too).

I think I would be one happy camper with a 1-12 combo from this era that I could plug my lap steel and danelectro into and sound like an old Warren Zevon recording.
