OD fuzziness
im playing a Ceriatone OTS and my overdrive is way too fuzzy. V2 snubbers are 330pF and im running my od trimmer at about 9:00-9:30
I just retubed with 12AX7's in the preamp, and 5881's in the power amp.
Can anyone help get rid of or reduce the fuzzyness

Re: OD fuzziness
What 12AX7's did you use? You might try the Mullard reissue, it tends to remove some of the fizz. Also take a look at the lead dress, especally on V1 and V2. Compare with some of the real Dumble pictures in the files section. You'll notice that the plate and cathode leads run parallel on all Dumbles. Copy this lead dress on your amp, you'll hear a difference.

Re: OD fuzziness
On the OD trimmer, what does 9 o'clock mean? If it means 3 quarters of the way up that could be the problem.
Re: OD fuzziness
i have tungsol 12AX7's in the preamp.
i mean 9 o'clock as in the OD is set a quarter of the way up, low gain.
thanks i'll try the lead dress trick, i've seen it in some other threads and people seem to be really satisfied with the results

Re: OD fuzziness
Where is everything else set? You should be able to set the gain structure up to be practically clean on the OD channel. HB or SC pickups? Really need more info to give some ideas.JD0x0 wrote:im playing a Ceriatone OTS and my overdrive is way too fuzzy. V2 snubbers are 330pF and im running my od trimmer at about 9:00-9:30

Re: OD fuzziness
also, what's your anode/cathode configuration on V1 and V2? old layout or revised one?
pre od-trimmer resistor?
treble bleed mod? have you tried?

Re: OD fuzziness
Yes you may want to try the treble bleed.
Some are using a .001uf cap and a 150K resistor in series from the input (CW) lug of the level pot to the ground buss.
Or better yet us a 350K-500K pot or trimmer to ground and find the best value.

Re: OD fuzziness
the layout is the updated one, i bought the amp in august. i only use single coil guitars, G&L's, and Fenders mostly.
i set the clean volume to about 5. bright off, mid on, rock on, treble 4, mid 5, bass 6, level 8, ratio 5-7, master to taste, presence 4

Re: OD fuzziness
Try Vol at 3
Level about 4-6 (8 is way too high)
You won't be pushing the OD as much with these settings. It worked for my #124 build.

Re: OD fuzziness
According the the trim and drive, I's say your gain structure is off. You want a better balance of where you're getting the gain from so all tubes work through this.
Raise the trim to about 70%, drive the preamp to about 1:00 and the drive to the same 1:00. If that's too much gain for you back off both the volume and drive until you find your gain setting. If it's still fizzy, attack the lead dress and possible the treble bleed.

Re: OD fuzziness
did you say you have the mid boost on? If so try it with it off. Mid boost adds a lot of top end information that is really cool for cutting thru a mix on a solo but I sure wouldn't want it on all the time
Re: OD fuzziness
i like the mid boost always on. i play lead guitar in my band so i really need it on all the time.JimiB wrote:did you say you have the mid boost on? If so try it with it off. i messed with the lead dress and upped the cap value on V2b and it helped alot.
as for lowering the gain. it really isnt that high for me, my guitars have pretty low output pickups and i keep them far from the strings. im also a very "gentle" player when im playing my pick barely brushes the string i dont dig in too much
i usually use the guitar's volume to clean it up if i need to.
anyway thanks for the help so far
i may do the treble bleed mod, im thinking i might lose too much highend, especially at lower volumes

Re: OD fuzziness
I'm not suggesting that you raise or lower the gain, I'm suggesting that you gain structiure is off. You have very little gain on the first 3 stages, then a ton on the last. Balance that out better for a smoother OD with less fizz.JD0x0 wrote:as for lowering the gain. it really isnt that high for me,

Re: OD fuzziness
its kinda absurd...
but my overtone is A LOT SMOOTHER WITHOUT SNUBBERS on V2.
Try this:
1)bring the slope resistor to 75k
2)Dime the value of the bass cap
3)Remove snubbers or put a very little one, kinda 100pF.
4)the LEVEL pot should be 100k
5)install the treble bleed mod
I0ve incredible tones now, smooth and fat, and the clean is stellar without honkyness and overpowering bass.
