10" and 12" Speaker Mix (D'Lite 22/33)

Post by doveman »

I've had my D'Lite 22/33 for almost a year. I've been able to get everything I've wanted out of it recording and I am very close in a new live band effort that I'm working on.

I'm running a G-1265 (97db) 1x12 open back. When paired up with a Emi 105 (100db) 2x10 it sounds good. But the two more efficient Emi speakers are just a bit louder than I would like in the mix. I can somewhat compensate by putting the 2x10 set on the bottom and stacking the 1x12 on top. Interesting to note that when recording I would generally run the 1x12 a bit higher in the mix too.

Anyway, in this new live situation I need a bit of beef from the amp. The 1x12 speaker alone with 6L6s will probably be OK but the combination of speaker cabinets definitely cuts through ... just a bit heavy on the 2x10.

So my question: I've been thinking about 2x10 options.
  • One might be replacing one or both 10s with a less efficient speaker like the 95db Celestion 10" Greenback ... but I'm imagining they would be darker. Maybe using the 97db Clestion G10 Vintage
  • I've thought about beam blockers on the 2x10 ... might knock a bit of the edge off.
  • Maybe a attenuator on the 2x10 cabinet but that can be expensive. I actually have the first attenuator (an Altair unit) seemed to work OK. But I worry about reports from others that they've wrecked amps with it. I've had it since the early 80s ... so it's probably OK.
  • I'm betting that a 1x10 8 ohm cabinet with a similar speaker would be just about right too. But that would take a new cab and new speaker.
Everything I've tried so far has worked with this amp ... just keeps getting better and better. I eventually get the sound I want to get.

Anyway ... any ideas? :D
