Hi all,
I'm doing a 6V6 HRM build with a BM PI here and as it happens I have a suitable OT that has ultralinear taps. Anyone have any experience using these on a Dumblesque amp? I'm curious what you thought of the results. There are supposedly some real advatages in PA efficiency and hum reduction going with ultralinear. So I'm thinking that the BM PI and maybe reducing the NFB will offset the 'negatvies' associated with ultralinear (apparent 'coolness' due to reduction even harmonics).

Yes. On one of my Peavey transplants. It was one of the 70's Peavey 2x12 combo's that had SS preamp and tube power amp, 60 watts out of 2 6L6's. I gutted it and left the UL taps connected. IMHO it sounds great but others wil disagree.
Dogears tried to talk me out of using the UL taps. I disconnected and put in another node on the PS. In the end I went back to UL. To my ears it sounded richer and fuller. It may have to do with the OT design.
On another note, I've done 3 of these Peavey transplants. Each one sounds great. One has been my main gigging amp for a year or so, the other 2 were sold to friends who use them extensively.

Yeah, I tried it with mine when I first put it together. I am using a 60 watt Hammond OPT. I tried it and it didn't sound very good at all... I was anxious to get the amp in use so I switched it back immediately afterward. I did absolutely no tweaking and I'd say it needs a better effort to know if it's a good idea or not. I think I can safely say that it would require more than a minimal effort to get it right.
I have a friend with a 50 watt Marshal that he modified with a high end stereo output tranny and he used the ultra linear wiring on that. One of the best sounding amps I've ever heard.
I'd curious what you come up with and would love to hear the whole story of what it takes to get it right.

Did you see this thread?: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... near#28178
Also, my Fender conversion maintained the ultralinear OT and I think it sounds great. Since I did not A/B compare it with and without ultralinear topology, all I can say is that the ultralinear OT certainly did not spoil the ODS front end.

Yep - I read that one. Sounded encouraging but left some doubt in my mind as to exactly what what under the hood. Thanks for posting!ic-racer wrote:Did you see this thread?: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... near#28178
