EVM 12L + ???? in a open 2x12 cabinet

Post by orca »

:(
I have a nice EVM 12L in a 2x12 cabinet, but can`t find a good buddy
for him.I tried some Celstions- G12-30, G12-65 , G12-80- and a
Jensen C12K , but together they don`t sound as good as the EVM alone.
The EVM 12L is very open und balanced;no pronounced mids or bass.
How is the new EVM12L Classic?
Any other suggestions?
I play a NIK HUBER ORCA with WCR Crossroads-Alnico II pickups.

Try a Celestion Classic Lead 80. Makes a good pair for me. Loud and proud with a little nice lead breakup from the Lead 80.

I have used EV 12Ls for years and recently got a 12L Classic and thought it sounded very close to the originals. It will need some break in as usual but it compared very well to all my old ones. The sound is there the big issue will be the weight. good luck

orca -- have you tried it with the one EV, closed back? It might sound pretty good. For close to a decade, Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler were running two EV-12Ls in Marshall 4-12"s. closed back, open speaker holes.

My build includes a combo cab and a 1x12 extension and comprises a Non-HRM style Bluesmaster running EL34s. I play country/blues/rock (tele and strat).

For me, the most articulate tones that I have gotten come from the combination of an EVM12L in the combo and Red Fang in the Extension. The Red Fang runs on the bright side and has slightly aggressive mids/upper mids. For my tele, this allows the balance of the EV to be offset with just a bit of emphasis on the upper mids, which really allows my lines to articulate cleanly. The low end on the RF is lean and tight and is compensated for by the full, balanced focus of the EV. In a band setting with organ/keys, acoustic guitar and bass, this pairing sits nicely in our mix.

That said, I have not tried this combination out in a 2x12.

Best regards
Tom
