non-hrm in the Bluesmaster style

Post by toml »

I have been struggling with my build to come up with an arrangement that allows me to switch between strat, tele and les paul with minimum knob tweaking.

Here is my current setup, which so far has gotten me pretty close to my goal.
non-hrm
100k/1.5k V1A with 5uf bypass
150k/2.2k V1B with 1uf bypass
220k/3.3k V2A with 5uf
150k/2.2k V2B with 5uf

Bluesmaster tone stack
Typical mid switch
PAB wired per DLite. I did not like the way that the Bluesmaster style PAB added mids to the boosted tone. I wanted it to thin out for lead work.

Bluesmaster PI

Bludotone OT

EL34s

Scumback Scumnico extension cab paired with a Heritage G12-65 in the combo.

The extra switches there are the fruits/scars of my journey. One switch (between the bright switch and OD switch) is my mid switch. The second switch (between OD and PAB) allowed my previous version to switch between Skyliner and Classic mid EQ caps. Now, it allows me to revoice my BM mid cap. The third switch (between the mid pot and bass pot) used to be a "DLite Bass mod" switch. I have repurposed this switch as a "mid switch" that allows me to alter the total resistance of the mid control for added mid girth, which I find nice for certain circumstances.

For the clip, Reverb is via a Peavey Valveverb in a passive effects loop. The delay is from an Eventide Timefactor on my pedalboard so the delay is currently in front of the amp.

My guitar is a CIJ Strat with Lindy Fralin Vintage hots.

There was no post recording processing, the delay and reverb in the clips is my live tone. The first pass is my clean tone and the second pass is light OD. PAB is off the entire clip.

Anyone else out there pairing up Alnico (or Scumnico) speakers with their builds? I have been enjoying this speaker pairing, but have not had the time to audition a lot of alternatives. I also liked a Scumback H75 in the combo, but overall perfer the G12-65, esp. when paired with the Scumnico.

I would appreciate any suggestions for further tweaks or experiences with speaker selection/build selection.

Best regards
Tom

First off, the way you play (very good, that is) your going to sound good with any amp :)

I have some recordings with my strat and Lindy Fralins and I hear a little more 'body' to the notes. Not a 'thin' as your recording.

Things that I think helped fatten mine up were :
increase the series resistance in the OD network
big cathode bypass caps on V1
snubbers on the OD tube
no effects loop
mic placement

IC: Nice clips. I hear what you are saying about the body of the notes.
Your clips do a nice job of showing several pickup positions so you get a good sense of the overall abilities of the amp.

Standing in the room, I typically have to watch the low end and that is what drove my choice of low values on the bypass caps.

I will try to re-record using better micing technique this weekend.

Thanks for the input.
