Should the Dlator be run on a variac to boost the voltage? Or is it intended to be run at whatever the typical house current is.

Er, uh, you're supposed to turn the house voltage into DC voltage to match the requirements of the tube. You also want 6.3 volts on the heaters. Crank the B+ rail and you do the same to the filaments.

Re: Dumbleator running voltage
A variac is designed to limit the voltage of the mains so that for example the first start up doesn't see full mains. Mine is capable of a small amount of over voltage which can help with testing, but otherwise you could use it if your mains was a touch too high or low I suppose. There is a picture I think on Rob Livesey's Dumble archive pics that has Robben's amp and rack sitting right next to a red variac (is this what promted the question?) but I suspect it was being used to moderate the mains. Here in the UK I'm supposed to see 230v, but this evening it is reading 244v, which would be my cue to get out the variac (again!)
Hope this helps.

mains variable
Yes sure, the readings for this device will vary as the mains voltage does. So I wonder if the optimal performance is what one strives for, or you just go with whatever the mains is at.
