Vishay/Dale Plate resistors

Post by heisthl »

Mouser just lowered their pricing and when I griped about paying way more last month they said "This month we increased the quantity that we order from the Manufacturer to get a better cost on this item. This increase in our buying quantity with the supplier reduced our cost by over 70%. We passed this cost savings along to our customers. If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know."
So anyway the price is now 31 cents.

That great news. Too bad they are not RoHS compatible yet.

I guess since you and Andy sell amps that's important to you. On that note, have you found a suitable replacement that IS RoHS compliant? Inquiring minds want to know (in case these go away for good).

THere are PLENTY of Dumbles in the world that have plain old 1/2W metal film plate loads. Although the Xicon variety is less than spectacular, I'm sure there are lots of brands that will sound fine.

I am gearing to ship to Europe in a few months. Risking sending a non-compliant item into the EC just isn't worth the possible fines, 5 and 6 digit numbers would put a quick end to my endeavors.

KOA Speer would be a good alternative. Stay clear of the XICON MF's they sound like A$$.

Of course, one of my favorites would be the KOA 1W carbon films, they also tend to add them own then to the harmonic content. The 1W Xicon CF are not that bad either.

That's what I had in my amp the first time I tried the RN65's. Jeez what a difference. I was ready to scrap the amp, now I love it.

One man's trash, another man's treasure. True story: Steve Kimock's 90s Dumble ODS was compeltely rebuilt, and a great many of the resistors that ended up in that amp were Xicon metal film 1% types. I understand Kimock was very pleased with the amp, and of course an amp bearing his name is now commercially available for a lot of cash. I do not know whether Xicons made the production model or not.

Personally, I think the NTE metal films rock. They are the best looking resistors ever made and they have the beefiest leads bar none. :)

You mean for plates, or any place in general?? I think I have some in my amp ... maybe I'll replace them and compare.

I don't like them in the signal path. The sound very edgy when used on the plates. I guess for power supply and maybe cathodes they might be ok, but they left a bad taste in my ears so I have dumped them from my amp projects.

I don't know, seems I remember someone going to their special stash and handing me a REALLY SEXY RED 150K slope resistor :).

I heard a couple of those signature amps...... no comment :).
