JBL G125

Post by greiswig »

I got a used JBL speaker off EBay. I'd remembered this speaker from years ago...that I thought it sounded kind of like a "kinder, gentler EV." This one is supposed to be nearly 20 years old.

I got it literally 30 minutes before a gig at our church, so I plonked it into a 1x12 cabinet that matched the one I have with a G12-65 in it, and took off.

When I got there and plugged in, I was pleased to find that it worked, and seemingly well! As I suspected, it was out of phase with the Celestion, but since it has spring terminals it was easy to fix that.

My overall impression is that it seems very good for my non-HRM, although it has a bit more of a push in the low mids around 600-700Hz or so, I'd guess. I hadn't remembered it sounding "boxy" like that. How do you tell if a speaker is in need of a recone if it isn't split, buzzing or anything? Or is that just the character of these speakers? I can't seem to find a response chart anywhere.

No comments, eh? Okay, does anyone have a response chart for this speaker? Even the JBL site doesn't seem to...

I like the G125. It is supposed to sound like a Celestion, but I haven't compared it directly. I have one in a 1cu ft ported box and really like the sound with my D-clones.

No graphs but I did find these.
