Tube different question

Post by sergio »

As a rule use the same tube for all stage?

Example:
Can I use SVETLANA for OD / PI stage and JJ for clean stage?

Thanks

 What's the different between :12ax7 ecc83 and 12ax7 ecc83 V1 ?

No problem. In fact it's usually best to mix and match preamp tubes.

Right now I have a JJ ECC83 in V1, EH12AX7 in V2 and a Sovtek 12AX7LPS in the PI position. It just sounded right when I put them in.

As for 12AX7/ECC83, they're the same. 12AX7 is the US designation, ECC83 is Europe, 7025 was the low noise version but today it's not used anymore.

Check out http://www.duncanamps.com and go to the tube data. It'll show what tubes are similar.

I'm not sure I understand your question(s) but I'll take a shot.
The standard ODS preamp tube configuration is 12AX7 for V1 and V2 and also PI. You can use/mix any brand you like in any position.
I think for the most part, people consider the ECC83 as the European equivalent of the 12AX7, and many tubes have both numbers on the tube.

the short answer is yes, any 12ax7 will give sound.

The long answer, is I ussually find an amp has the best harmonics when I mix and match brands....What/where? well thats really up to the amp to decide, and each one I voice has its own nuances.

I ussually start with EH pre's, and JJ power, but often the pre's get swapped around as part of the voicing process. No real rules there, just ears.
it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds

Try and use a "Long Plate" in the PI position. If you're using old tubes just look through the glass, the one with the longest metal piece is a long plate.

Wow!
heisthl already got to tube geometry, which I thought wouldn't come up until post #50 or so.
Some of the best soudning preamp tubes are old Mullards, Telefunkens and RCAs (usually with the long plates).
I was going to say (in order of preference)

1) Low-gain early/high-gain late
2) Low-gain early/low-gain late (and turn it up!)
3) High-gain early/low-gain late
4) High-gain early/high-gain-late

#1 is the sound of a Tweed Fender; #2 is old Gibson; #3 is Blackface Fender; #4 is early Marshall.

Get a tube tester -- a Hickok or an AVO -- expensive, useless for output tubes, but a godsend for preamp tubes.

Buona mattina, Sergio --
I think they are just trying to sell you tubes. If you can, buy several different Russian Tubes and Slovakian tubes. And, as finances permit, buy some NOS English, German and American (RCA, GE) tubes. Then mix them around around in your amp to suit your taste. There is no secret recipe -- it is essentially impossible to make the same tube twice.

Of course, to make the same tube twice you'd have to disassemble it first.

As for what I know you meant to say: that's why there's such a thing as tolerances. In the days of mass production of tubes manufacturers were destroying tubes that fell outside spec spread by truck load. Nowadays they just keep adding suffixes and grades so they can sell everything that comes off assembly line. Apply some mumbojumbomojo talk and voila: you sell all the junky tubes too.

Sergio,i don`t know how it is in Italy but over here you can find really good tubes at fleamarkets for eurocents.
I picked up a 3 perfectly good Philips ecc83`s and an ecc85 for one euro last time i visited one.
Look for philips, valvo, telefunfen, adzam, aeg, siemens, brimar and if you are lucky mullard.Sell the Mullard on e-bay and buy some more of the rest.
Many people are not aware of the fact that mullard was part of philips and many philips tubes are actually made at the mullard factory. The philips come in 2 plate sizes.I prefer the longer in V1 and the shorter in V2 and V3.
The difference in sound with JJ and EH tubes is unbelievable.I had them in my Dlite at first but when i switched to the philips the amp came to life.Much more a 3D sound.
