Stand-alone rackmount Dumble-ator complete

Post by kleinm »

Hey guys. I thought I'd share a few pictures of my Dumble-ator I just finished.

I'm really quite impressed with this design. It works really, really nicely. I have no noise in my build, and the minimal coloration it adds is very tasty. It seems to slightly smooth out the high end and adds a little something in the bottom end that is very cool. FWIW, I used a 1k3/47uF Rk/Ck on the recovery stage as seen in the actual Dumble-ator pictures Funk posted a while back.

The build was pretty simple and enjoyable, although it took me a long time to complete. I used a Klein sheet metal nibbler to chew out the transformer and IEC holes. I removed the powdercoat for the ground points with a Dremel tool.

Many, many, many thanks out to Funk. I couldn't have made this without your documentation and goodies. You're the dude!

Beautiful, I guess it sounds (and functions) just as it should. Is that a funk transformer?

How does it compare to your solid state version?

I can see building these with tubes, but the idea of building them HUGE just to look like Dumbleators just rubs me wrong.

Looks nice and clean! :D
But I agree with tele, huge real estate for the components.

Yes, how does it compare with your Kleinaltor.

Don't let that smoke out!

They're similar in many ways, but different in others. I'll have to spend more time with the JFET versions comparing the two. One thing that surprised me is that they have very similar headroom response with 2N5457, even J201 FETS. You can get even more using something like a MPF102, but I prefer the sound of the J201. The biggest thing for me is now RE: comparison, I have an actual benchmark to compare my various SS toys to.

I'm wondering - have you measured the actual amplitude of the signal going into the PI at full power? How much bandwidth is really needed?
I haven't gotten around to opening mine up lately and turning on the scope...

Thanks man! Your stuff is awesome to work with. I'm glad I went with the 1k3/47uF combo, too!

Where'd you pickup the chassis from? Mouser?

Thanks,
