Fear Of A Dumble Planet!

I've asked the same question on another board. It's not like Ford can sue you for discussing Ford cars.

Maybe, but we are all trying to emulate his work and "that tone", so he did somthing right.

Well.. i can see someone like him or KC being mad if someone was making the amps to sell, basically profitting off his work. But for the average guy like me... no way i could ever afford the real thing anyway... so not really losin anything by me trying to make one:)

For example:

About 2 years ago I was going to do a run of Chassis, and I posted their availability on another builder forum, by the next day the post had been removed by the moderator due to threatening messages from Alexander Dumble. In order to get him to consider building you an amp you have to submit a tape of your playing for his approval, as well as sign this document:

The amp tech at my local shop (extremely knowledgeable guy) has owned two Dumbles over the years and, of course, knew HAD..

He's told me some SERIOUSLY wierd stories about the guy - including cancelling the order for his 3rd amp (a SSS, I think) because he called to check on the order and called him "Howard".. this was when he had started using "Alexander" (nobody told the customers).

He also told me that he would only build amps when the 'stars were aligned' or something like that... all kinds of wierdness from that guy - at least that's what I hear.

There's nothing odd or wired about someone protecting his trade name or intellectual property. Large corporations and small companies do it as a matter of course.

Canceling orders because you use the wrong name is of course wacko.

Folks that I've talked to that have met him and work under hs rules say he's a great guy. I wouldn't know.

Wasn't the name change to try to get out of a contract or something? I thought it was some sort of dodgy event.

As far as I can tell the licensing is legit on the original licensee, but shouldn't be binding on people to whom the amps are resold. Thus the goop.

That declaration is very interesting, especially the part where the individual agrees not to sell the amp. At least in Germany such a commitment would not be legally binding, i.e. the 2nd purchaser could acquire the title to the amp. Whether the 1st buyer could be liable to compensation for a breach of contract is a different matter. I know because I am a lawyer in my day job. Maybe I should not have posted this because HAD may refrain from selling amps to German customers ...

He doesn't build ODS amps anymore anyway, he does something called an ultraphonix now, which is about a $4000 mod to a bassman head.
