Thank You TAG Community - My 124 Build

Post by mkerlin »

I started with the tweed Champs and graduated up through a series of kits, did a 64 Vibroverb and a Deluxe Reverb from my own sourcing, but I've always really wanted to source everything and build an ODS. Finding this Forum and all the incredibly useful resources and information has proven invaluable. So I wanted to share my build and salute some of the contributors that helped along the way.

I particularly want to thank Jelle Welagen who helped me solve a puzzling boo boo and was tremendously generous with his personal time and tips. Thanks Martin manning, amplifiednation, pompeiisneaks, Structo, GAStan, erwin_ve, ijedouglas, sluckey, Stephen1966. I'm sure I've left omitted a few others...

Now I'd really like to build a version with reverb, but my goodness its really, really hard to justify having another amp in the house

Outstanding work!
Those cabs look great!
Agree with xtian...nice shop, and you will rationalize another build...suggest a Bluesmaster circuit, everyone needs one. :)

Looks great! What does the pot between the IEC inlet and the fuse do?

Well that was my one big deviation and I thought it might be a good idea to try. I stole the idea from a Howlin' Amps schematic I saw in my research that moved the OD trimmer to the back of the amp so that it could be manipulated more easily. I used coax in the routing to limit the noise with its proximity to AC power. I can undo it easily enough and it seems usable so far. Is there a downside I'm not anticipating?

No downside as long as it’s quiet. In my experience once you find out where you like it it tends to stay there. It basically sets the minimum distortion level.

Beautiful build!

Not sure if this helps, but no collection of these amps is complete unless it has at least one of each: 124, 183, 102 & SSS 8)

Nice looking build indeed! Love the suede on those cabs too. How do you like the EV speakers? I have the 65’s with mine but my curiosity is pushing me to try those out.

Looks great and very neat on the inside!
Those fellers you mentioned in the second paragraph are truly awesome teachers and incredibly generous with their knowledge and experience (and patience for us new guys). Thanks to them - I can’t stop thinking up things to (try to) build, lol.

I also second Xtian’s statement; you’ll figure out justification for the next one, and the one after that, and the one after that…

Great job👍
