What was the idea behind the Odyssey here?

Post by captaincoconut »

Hi! I was watching some old Eric Johnson footage and had to stop this video when I noticed that Eric appears to have his Odyssey amp standing on top of his Steel String Singer. Anyone has an idea or informed guess what might be the reasoning behind this? From my understanding the Odyssey was a power amp, correct? So was he going from the preamp output of his SSS into the Odyssey? Was the SSS already toast at that point in his career? Bueller? Bueller?

At this point: Yes. As far as I remember, he used this constellation for the crunch sounds he was aiming for, and not because the SSS was defective. I once tried a similar setup of a SSS 150W (kind of) preamp into a 100W Odyssey out of curiosity, and it certainly sounds and responds differently than with the SSS 150W power amp. Whether you prefer it is, as always, a matter of personal taste.
