its been 6 yrs and i finally am getting my build fired up!

Post by skyripper2 »

I have just spent the last few days working on my Dumble clone checking all my wiring for continuity and have sorta figured out my footswitch wiring. I can say that when I got my 12v relays to switch it brought a big smile to my face. my pilot is lit , and all my tubes were showing voltage on the heaters . so now I have just soldered in my secondaries on the hammond 290fx and am going to soon run it tubes out with a bulb limiter and a 60watt bulb . i first need to get some better test leads (clamping type to check my voltages ). I got lucky an got a fluke 79lll for 100 bucks and am itching to bring my amp to life. I thank all on here for their support and input.

Outstanding! Good luck on first fire up! If for whatever reason you have kinks, let us know, it's not uncommon :D

I got me some test leads at home depot rated @ 1000v and they came with screw on gator clips !!!!! https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.test ... 51533.html
22 bucks sounded good too me, made by Klein . I also got a five pack of 5amp fuses . so I hope to fire it up in the morning on the 60 watt bulb and check the voltages. i was reading about checking seven nodes and am not really sure if i'm all over it or not? first i got to vac or blow it out as i can see it needs it. Getting stoked ..............and for anyone looking for a decent set of test leads the Klein's are a good buy.

so I have been using my amp now for a few months and getting a good sound out of it but know my v1 v2 andv3 are on the low side as in v1=183v v2=185v v3=205v . Am i hurting anything running it like this? should i tweak the dropping string resistors to get it more in line? Man I love my first build so much. I have to say thanks to all the amp garagers who posted and made my amp build a reality.

That voltage is fine for V1 plates, IMO.

It looks like a high plate skyliner. Martin, you don't think those voltages are a bit low for a high plate? Skyripper2, what is your B+ or the voltages on the plates of your power tubes and what are your dropping resistor values?

Yeah the PI looks a little low!.V1 and V2 can run in between 185 and 210 depending on what you are after.
IMO High plate Skyliners sound best with PI @ around 280/290.Like
Like CW asks what are your plates running?

BTW.I see you have the screens/PI and V2 grounded together?. Take another look at the 124 layout for where to run those respected ground points!

i have 442v on the plates of the power tubes. my dropping resistors are 3.3k and 22k.
my amp is quiet and no grounding issues. thanks for the help

Are you sure that the 205V you quote for V3 is correct? I don’t think it is given the V1 and V2 voltages A range from 180 to 200 on V1 plates is typical, but this is something you can adjust to taste, and you are certainly not hurting anything running on the low end.

Just noticed Erwin's post.It does look like a 220 ohm on one of the balancing resistors

On your pics: I see a 220 Ohm resistor on the totem pole capacitors at the B+ filtering? If so, this should be at least 220k.
Also on the other side of the totem pole: a 220k resistor in case it is a 220 Ohm. At that point you also have a cold solder joint.
Edit: also looking at the plate resistors at the phase inverter: the resistor that is supposed to be a 110k is a 110 Ohm resistor? Color codes are hard to read in the pics. I would definitly check these!

ya those are older pics of my amp and them resistors have been up sized i had quite a few wrong values as in 220 ohm instead of 220k ......good eye though, and thanks for your input .i am thinking if i want to bring my volts up on v1 to v3 i will need to change the dropping string values but am already pleased with how it sounds and was just wondering if i was putting my amp at risk running it as is. and from what i gather on here i am not hurting anything .

Before moving on: the phase inverter tube voltages dont look ok. Check my previous post on the plate resistors, we crossed posts while editing.
